The Wake-Up Call

Story summary: Ben and Felicity are becoming friends. Ben invites Felicity to his Halloween party and gets upset when she brings a date. Things heat up with Ben and Felicity, which in turn cools Felicity’s longing to be with Ben.

INT: NOEL’S ROOM-DAY
THERE IS A KNOCK AT THE DOOR.
NOEL: Come in.
FELICITY: (opening door) Hi Noel, do you have a minute?
NOEL: Actually I was just about to go…somewhere.
FELICITY: You don’t lie very well.
NOEL: No, I guess I don’t…what can I do for you?
FELICITY: Tell me why you’re avoiding me.
NOEL: This would not be a short conversation.
FELICITY: Is it something I did…something I said?
NOEL: It’s a little more complicated then that.
FELICITY: Is there anything I can do to make you stop avoiding me?
NOEL: Okay…maybe you should sit down.
FELICITY: A sit down conversation…not a good sign.
NOEL: Well in a nutshell…shortened version…It’s Ben.
FELICITY: Ben? What does Ben have to do with you avoiding me?
NOEL: Things have changed with you and Ben…and I find it easier to take if I don’t have to deal with it.
FELICITY: Noel…things with Ben and I arestill the same.
NOEL: In theory maybe…but I can hear the clock ticking.
FELICITY: What clock?
NOEL: Ben’s… the one that’s going to give him the wake-up call.
FELICITY: You’ve lost me.
NOEL: I’m a guy Felicity… I know the signs.
FELICITY: The signs of what?
NOEL: Ben is falling for you.
FELICITY: Your wrong Noel…Ben just wants to be friends. Believe me I know…I’ve had this conversation with him before.
NOEL: I know what he says…it’s what he does that counts.
FELICITY: I didn’t come here to discuss Ben…I came here to discuss us.
NOEL: Us?
FELICITY: Noel, the other night you kissed me.
NOEL: Yes, yes I did.
FELICITY: Why did you do that?
NOEL: I couldn’t help myself…I don’t think I’ve ever lied to you about how I feel.
FELICITY: No, you haven’t…but usually when someone kisses someone…it starts something.
NOEL: What do you want from me Felicity?
FELICITY: I guess that was my question for you Noel…What do you want from me?
NOEL: That’s the easy part. I want you…but not the baggage that comes with you.
FELICITY: The baggage?
NOEL: Your feelings for Ben, Ben’s feelings for you.
FELICITY: Noel…you’ve got it all wrong…I’m working on getting over Ben.
NOEL: Felicity… I don’t want to be that guy who helps you get over Ben. I want to be the guy you want instead of Ben.
THERE IS A KNOCK ON NOEL’S DOOR.
NOEL: (opens door) Yes.
GIRL: Hi, I was hoping you had time to talk…give me some advice.
NOEL: This is a bad time…could you come back later?
FELICITY: Actually I think our conversation was finished…he’s free to talk.
GIRL: (enters room) Thanks.
NOEL: Felicity…
FELICITY: No…it’s pretty clear to me where you stand now. I appreciate the honesty.
FELICITY WALKS BACK TO HER ROOM. BEN IS WAITING BY HER DOOR.
BEN: Hey, there you are…I’ve been waiting like 20 minutes.
FELICITY: Did I know you were coming over?
BEN: We were going to work on our English assignment together…but I can come back later.
FELICITY: Oh that’s right. I’m sorry. I’ve been kind of preoccupied lately.
BEN: No harm done.
FELICITY: Come on in.
BEN AND FELICITY WALK INTO HER ROOM.
JULIE IS WALKING DOWN HALL AND SEES THIS. GOES TOWARDS NOEL’S ROOM. NOEL OPENS DOOR JULIE IS STANDING THERE.GIRL ALREADY IN ROOM LEAVES.
NOEL: Julie…Hi. What can I do for you?
JULIE: Talk to me.
NOEL: Okay…come on in.
JULIE: It’s about Ben.
NOEL: I’m going to start scheduling the Ben Covington hour.
JULIE: Actually…it’s about Felicity and Ben.
NOEL: What about them?
JULIE: I think Ben is falling for Felicity.
NOEL: Join the club.
JULIE: So my problem is…. do I look for someone else…like Zack maybe or tell Ben that I maybe kind of do have feelings for him?
NOEL: Look for someone else.
JULIE: Exactly what qualifications do you have to be a Resident Advisor?
NOEL: Look if you don’t like the advice…don’t take it…I really don’t care.
JULIE: Wake up on the wrong side of the bed…did we?
NOEL: I’m just fed-up with people coming to me for advice…when they clearly don’t intend to take it.
JULIE: This is about Felicity isn’t it?
NOEL: Yeah…I guess it is…sorry.
JULIE: It’s okay. I guess I touched a nerve. Do you need to talk?
NOEL: I like her so much…and he doesn’t even realize how special she is.
JULIE: I know it doesn’t seem fair…but maybe things will change.
NOEL: No…the only thing that’s going to change is my obsession with her.
FELICITY AND BEN ARE SITTING IN HER ROOM STUDYING.
BEN: So what are you doing for Halloween?
FELICITY: Halloween?…I’m not really sure.
BEN: Well my roommates and I are throwing a party…you should come.
FELICITY: Yeah…maybe. I was planning on trying to find something to do with Julie and her friend Zack.
BEN: Zack?
FELICITY: He’s a guy she met in the Laundry room…the guy who has all the pink clothes.
BEN: (laughs) The pink guy?
FELICITY: (laughing) Yeah the pink guy.
BEN: Julie sure can pick em.
FELICITY: He’s really very nice…just not much of a laundry expert.
BEN: Well invite them too…the more the merrier.
FELICITY: Okay…I’ll do that.
BEN: Great…I’ll drop a flyer by for you later.(starts packing up books) I’ve got to go…thanks for the help.
NEXT SCENE: JULIE AND FELICITY ARE SITTING AT A CHINESE RESTAURANT BY THE SCHOOL.
FELICITY: So…Ben invited us to his Halloween party…what do you think?
JULIE: Sounds fun…Zack might be bringing a friend with him…is that okay with you?
FELICITY: Sure why wouldn’t it be…wait are you trying to set me up?
JULIE: He’s really cute Felicity…His name is Cole.
FELICITY: I don’t know Julie…I’m not sure Ben expects me to bring a date.
JULIE: Did he tell you not to bring a date?…besides Felicity Ben hasn’t given you any further indication that anything has changed between the two of you.
FELICITY: Your right…I told him I wasn’t going to put my life on hold…it’s just…
JULIE: So it’s settled then. Zack brings Cole to meet you.
FELICITY: All right.
NEXT SCENE: BEN IS KNOCKING ON FELICITY’S DOOR. NOEL WALKS UP.
NOEL: She’s not home.
BEN: Oh…Ok…I told her I would bring this flyer over for her…I guess I’ll just bring it by later.
NOEL: I’ll take it.
BEN: (hands flyer to Noel) You’ll make sure she gets it?
NOEL: Don’t you trust me?
BEN: Yeah…I guess so.
NOEL: Look if you have a problem with me giving it to her….
FELICITY AND JULIE WALK UP.
FELICITY: What’s going on here?
BEN: Felicity…I was just dropping by the flyer for the party.
FELICITY: (takes flyer from Noel) Thanks Ben.
BEN: (to Julie) Did Felicity tell you about the party?
JULIE: Yes…Zack and I will be there.
BEN: Good…we’ll I’ve got some studying so I’ll see you later.
BEN WALKS AWAY.
JULIE: I’ll see you later too Felicity…bye.
JULIE WALKS AWAY.
NOEL: (to Felicity) So does that mean you won’t be attending the floor party?
FELICITY: I was thinking I would do both.
NOEL: Are you going to the party as Ben’s date?
FELICITY: No…Noel I told you we're just friends.
NOEL: Yeah…so you say.
NEXT SCENE: JULIE, ZACK AND COLE ARE PICKING FELICITY UP FOR BEN’S HALLOWEEN PARTY. JULIE KNOCKS ON FELICITY’S DOOR.
FELICITY: (opens door) Wow…you guys look great.
JULIE: Not so bad yourself…Felicity this is Cole, Cole this is Felicity.
FELICITY: Pleased to meet you Cole.
COLE: Actually…I already know who you are.
FELICITY: You do?
COLE: Yes…we have a class together…Inorganic Chemistry.
FELICITY: Really?
COLE: You sit up front…I hide in the back row.
FELICITY: (laughs) I wish I’d been that smart.
NEXT SCENE: BEN’S HALLOWEEN PARTY. FELICITY, JULIE, ZACK AND COLE WALK IN.
JULIE: I have never seen so many people in my life.
FELICITY: Do you see Ben?
JULIE: No…but I wouldn’t recognize my own sister in this mob.
FELICITY: (to Julie) You have a sister?
JULIE: It’s just an expression…never mind.
ZACK: Would you girls like something to drink?
JULIE: Sounds good…How bout a wine cooler?.
FELICITY: Yeah, I’ll have a wine cooler too.
ZACK AND COLE GO OFF IN SEARCH OF BEVERAGES.
FELICITY: I don’t see Ben anywhere.
JULIE: I do…Felicity don’t get upset but he’s kissing a girl.
FELICITY: Are you sure?
JULIE: Yes…he’s over by his bedroom door.
FELICITY: I don’t know what direction that is…you’ll have to point me.
JULIE POINTS BEN OUT AND FELICITY SEES HIM KISSING THE GIRL.
JULIE: Are you okay?
FELICITY: I’m fine…I have a date too…it’s nothing to be upset about.
ZACK AND COLE COME BACK WITH THE DRINKS.
COLE: (hands beer to Felicity) Sorry, they didn’t have anything over there but beer.
FELICITY: That’s fine. (takes a beer and starts swigging it)
JULIE: You might want to slow it down there Felicity…you told me you aren’t much of a drinker.
FELICITY: There’s a first time for everything.
FELICITY FINISHES OFF BEER.
COLE: Would you like another beer?
FELICITY: Thanks…I think I would.
ZACK AND COLE GO TO GET MORE BEER FOR THE GIRLS. BEN WALKS OVER.
BEN: Felicity is that you?
FELICITY: Yes.
BEN: You’re costume is great.
FELICITY: Thanks.
BEN: Is everything okay?
FELICITY: Everything is just fine.
BEN: Are you sure…you seem kinda mad.
FELICITY: What would I have to mad at you about?
BEN: Believe me when I say…I don’t know.
ZACK AND COLE WALK BACK UP TO THE GIRLS.
COLE: (hands beer to Felicity) Here you go.
BEN: Aren’t you going to introduce your friends?
FELICITY: Ben this is Zack and Cole.
ZACK: Are you the Ben throwing the party?
BEN: Yeah that’s me.
COLE: Great party.
BEN: Thanks…I’m sorry what was your name again?
FELICITY: His name is Cole…he’s my date.
BEN: Oh…Can I talk to you a second Felicity?
FELICITY: Um…sure…I’ll be right back Cole.
BEN AND FELICITY WALK INTO HIS ROOM. BEN TURNS ON THE LIGHT.
GUY AND GIRL ARE ON HIS BED MAKING OUT.
GUY: Hey man…turn out the light this room is taken.
BEN: No can do brother…this happens to be my room…the one I pay rent for…so scram.
GUY AND GIRL GET UP OFF THE BED AND LEAVE.
FELICITY: What did you want Ben? I need to get back to my date.
BEN: What’s going on Felicity?
FELICITY: What do you mean?
BEN: Why didn’t you tell me earlier that you were bringing a date?
FELICITY: I wasn’t aware that I had to approve all my dates through you.
BEN: That’s not what I’m saying…it’s just that I thought we had sort of reached an…agreement.
FELICITY: You giving me mixed signals here Ben…I mean If you wanted me here for you…
BEN: It’s not that…it’s just I sort of expected to get to spend some time with you.
FELICITY: Would that time have been before or after your make-out session with the power ranger lady?
BEN: I get it now…that’s why you’re mad at me…because of Sissy.
FELICITY: Her name is Sissy?
BEN: Anyone who dates a man named Cole has no room to talk.
FELICITY: Ben, why are we having this conversation…We have no intimate relationship…we kissed that’s all.
BEN: I don’t know…it’s just when your here I expect you to be here for me.
FELICITY: Would you like me to leave?
BEN: Yes…forget it, never mind…go and have a good time. (starts walking out)
FELICITY: Ben…wait.
BEN: (turns around) No…you’re right Felicity we don’t have anything…I have no right to dictate to you.
BEN WALKS AWAY. FELICITY SITS DOWN ON BED. COLE COMES TO FIND HER.
COLE: There you are…I was starting to get worried.
COLE SITS DOWN NEXT TO FELICITY AND PUTS HIS ARM AROUND HER.
COLE: Are you okay? (turns Felicity’s face toward his)
FELICITY: I guess…I feel not so nice right now.
COLE: Because of the old boyfriend?
FELICITY: Old boyfriend?
COLE: Ben…the guy you were in here with a minute ago.
FELICITY: Ben’s not my boyfriend…ex or otherwise…I know him from high school.
COLE: Well that’s a relief…I was afraid he was having second thoughts and I was going to spend the rest of the night alone.
FELICITY: Nope…everything is fine.
COLE: Well in that case…(Cole leans in and kisses Felicity)
FELICITY RETURNS COLE’S KISS. BEN WALKS IN.
FELICITY AND COLE PULL APART.
BEN: Any chance you don’t have to do that in here?
FELICITY: (embarrassed ) Ben…I’m sorry.
BEN: Yeah…all right. I’m kind of tired so if you could leave…I would appreciate it.
COLE: Sure man…sorry.
FELICITY AND COLE WALK OUT OF THE ROOM AND BEN SLAMS THE DOOR.
FELICITY AND COLE WALK BACK OVER TO ZACK AND JULIE.
JULIE: Is everything okay with Ben?
COLE: He doesn’t seem like too happy of a guy.
ZACK: We were thinking about going to get something to eat…are you two game?
FELICITY: Actually…I need to go to the floor party still…so you guys go ahead without me. I’m just going to tell Ben goodnight and then I’m going to head over to the dorm…I’ll catch up with you there.
COLE: I’ll stay with you if you want.
FELICITY: That’s okay…thank you though.
FELICITY WALKS OVER AND KNOCKS ON BEN’S DOOR.
BEN: (Opens door just a crack.) Yeah?
FELICITY: Ben it’s Felicity…can I please come in?
BEN: (opens door fully) Why?
FELICITY: I won’t stay long. I just feel bad about our conversation.
BEN: Fine…come in. (Felicity walks in. Ben closes door behind her)
FELICITY: Are you going to turn on the lights?
BEN: (crawls back in bed) No…we seem to communicate much better in the dark…besides I have a headache. (pats bed) Come sit down.
FELICITY: (sits on bed) We have to stop fighting Ben…I feel like we spend the majority of our time together apologizing to each other.
BEN: That’s probably because we do.
FELICITY: Ben…we need to be honest with each other…take tonight for example…if you wanted me to be here for you…you should have told me. Then it would have been up to me to decide if I came here alone or with a date.
BEN: I guess it was pretty wrong of me to just assume you’d come here alone.
FELICITY: But that’s the other issue Ben…why did you want me to come here alone?…but when I walked in you were engaged in activities with Sissy.
BEN: When I got to New York Sissy was the first girl I dated…we just sort of fell back into old habits. Neither one of us intended to take it any further.
FELICITY: How many Sissy’s have there been?
BEN: Three.
FELICITY: Oh…does that include back home?
BEN: Okay…five.
FELICITY: Five?…I guess it could be worse.
BEN: Would you stay here with me a while?
FELICITY: I probably shouldn’t…I told Julie I would meet them back at the floor party.
BEN: Please…just for a little while. We can talk…practice our honesty.
FELICITY: All right…(Felicity lays down next to Ben)
NEXT SCENE: COLE IS TALKING TO JULIE.
COLE: So what’s up with Felicity and Ben?
JULIE: What do you mean?
COLE: Does he like her?
JULIE: I honestly don’t know.
COLE: Shouldn’t she be here by now?
NOEL WALKS UP TO JULIE. COLE WALKS AWAY.
NOEL: Where’s Felicity?
JULIE: She is still at Ben’s party.
NOEL: Did something happen with them?
JULIE: I’m not sure…but I think maybe.
NOEL: Isn’t Cole suppose to be her date?
JULIE: That was the original plan.
LATER THAT NIGHT FELICITY IS SLEEPING NEXT TO BEN AND HE IS WATCHING HER. BEN LEANS OVER AND KISSES FELICITY. FELICITY STARTS TO WAKE UP.
FELICITY: Ben…mmm that’s nice. (Felicity continues to kiss Ben and things start to heat up)
EXT: THE LOFT-EARLY MORNING
NOEL IS AT THE FRONT OF BEN’S APARTMENT…INSISTANTLY BUZZING THE INTERCOM. SEAN ANSWERS.
SEAN: (OC) (irritated) Do you know what time it is?
NOEL: (looks at watch) It’s 4:30 a.m….Is there still anyone up there?
SEAN: Just those of us who live here. Now go away.
NOEL: I need to talk to Ben.
SEAN: Ben is sleeping.
NOEL: I realize that…it’s important.
SEAN: Hold on.
SEAN GOES AND KNOCKS ON BEN’S DOOR.
BEN: Go away!
SEAN: (through door) There is some lunatic outside…says he needs to talk to you.
BEN: (to Felicity) I don’t believe this.
FELICITY: It’s okay…
BEN: I’ll be right back…don’t move.
BEN GETS UP AND ANSWERS INTERCOM.
BEN: Yeah.
NOEL: Ben it’s Noel.
BEN: Noel?
NOEL: Felicity’s RA.
BEN: What do you want man?
NOEL: I was wondering if you had seen Felicity…she was suppose to meet some friends back at the dorm but she never showed up.
BEN: Yeah…She’s here.
NOEL: With you?
BEN: That’s really none of your business.
FELICITY WALKS OUT FULLY DRESSED.
FELICITY: What’s going on?
BEN: (turning around) It’s your RA.
FELICITY: Noel?…he’s here?
BEN: Are you leaving?
NOEL: What?
BEN: (into intercom) Not you…(to Felicity) Are you leaving?
FELICITY: I think so…I’m sorry.
BEN: Are you okay?
FELICITY: I’m fine…could you tell Noel I’m on my way down.
BEN: ( into intercom) Noel…Felicity is on her way down.
BEN WALKS OVER TO FELICITY AND GIVES HER A KISS.
BEN: Let me just get a shirt and I’ll walk you down.
FELICITY: That’s okay…Noel’s down there.
BEN: Are you sure everything is okay?
FELICITY: Yes…I’ll talk to you later.
FELICITY WALKS DOWN AND MEETS NOEL.
NOEL: Not to sound parental here…but what happened to you?
FELICITY: I fell asleep.
NOEL: Everyone was worried about you.
FELICITY: I know…I’m sorry.
EXT: FELICITY’S DORM DOOR-DAY
BEN IS KNOCKING ON FELICITY’S DOOR
NOEL: She’s not home…Felicity I mean.
BEN: She’s not? Do you know when she’ll be back?
NOEL: Not till tomorrow. Her parents came into town. So she’s staying with them.
BEN: Okay…Thanks.
BEN WALKS AWAY. NOEL WALKS INTO HIS ROOM.
INT: NOEL’S ROOM-DAY
FELICITY IS SITTING IN A CHAIR.
NOEL: Well you’re safe till tomorrow. I told Ben you were staying with your parents.
FELICITY: My parents? Noel they live 3000 miles away!
NOEL: I know. I told him they were in town.
FELICITY: Oh…Thanks.
NOEL: So are you going to tell me what’s going on with Ben or not?
FELICITY: It’s a long story.
NOEL: We’ve got till tomorrow.
FELICITY: It’s complicated.
NOEL: I love complex stories.
FELICITY: It’s embarrassing.
NOEL: This just keeps getting better and better.
FELICITY: Fine…OK. Ben and I…well we…god this is incredibly embarrassing…we almost….you know…
NOEL: You and Ben?
FELICITY: Yes.
NOEL: And that’s why you’re avoiding him?
FELICITY: Yes.
NOEL: Okay…when you say almost…
FELICITY: Everything but the actual…we’ll you know.
NOEL: Oh…wow not what I expected. So what stopped you?
FELICITY: You.
NOEL: Me? What did I do? (understanding dawns) You mean when I got there…ouch… sorry.
FELICITY: It’s okay really…your timing was good.
NOEL: Excuse me?
FELICITY: Well…it was just going a little bit faster than I wanted.
NOEL: So why didn’t you just tell him to stop?
FELICITY: I did…in my mind. My body just kept saying yes.
NOEL: You know you’re going to have to face him eventually.
FELICITY: I know…but when I do I want to know how I feel.
INT: ENGLISH CLASS-DAY
FELICITY WALKS IN THE ROOM AND IMMEDIATELY SEES BEN SITTING THERE.
BEN: Felicity…over here I saved you a seat.
FELICITY: (walks over and sits down) Thanks.
BEN: So how were your parents?
FELICITY: Actually Ben I wasn’t with my parents yesterday.
BEN: You weren’t?
FELICITY: No…I wasn’t.
BEN: So why did Noel tell me you were?
FELICITY: I asked him to.
BEN: You asked Noel to lie to me? Why?
FELICITY: I was confused…I needed time to think.
BEN: Oh…I was afraid of that. What happened between us…it was too much. Wasn’t it?
FELICITY: I wasn’t sure. That’s why I wanted time to think.
BEN: Well what did you decide?
TEACHER WALKS INTO START CLASS.
FELICITY: We’ll talk later.
AT THE END OF CLASS FELICITY AND BEN WALK OUT TOGETHER..
BEN: Do you want to go back to my place for lunch?…So we can talk.
FELICITY: Sure.
INT: BEN’S LOFT-DAY
FELICITY AND BEN ARE AT HIS APARTMENT. THEY HAVE JUST FINISHED EATING LUNCH.
FELICITY: That was good…thanks.
BEN: Your welcome.
FELICITY: It’s getting pretty late…maybe we should get back to class.
BEN: I thought we were going to talk.
FELICITY: There’s really not much time left before my next class.
BEN: Why are you avoiding this conversation Felicity?
FELICITY: I’m not avoiding it…I just happen to think there will be a better time for it.
BEN: Look if you’re not interested in pursuing this any further just tell me. Don’t play games. I hate head games.
FELICITY: You think I’m playing games with you? Ben it’s just that I can’t decide this right now.
BEN: You can’t or you won’t?
FELICITY: Ben…I really like you. But up until a few weeks ago you didn’t want this. I had pretty much resigned myself to that fact.
BEN: So things have changed. Why is this bad?
FELICITY: I just don’t want to wrap my life up into yours and then have you do another about face.
BEN: Oh I see…so you doubt my sincerity?
FELICITY: That’s not what I’m saying.
BEN: Then you believe I’m sincere?
FELICITY: That’s not what I’m saying either.
BEN: Actually that’s the problem here Felicity…you aren’t saying much of anything.
FELICITY: That’s not fair Ben.
BEN: I don’t understand you Felicity. From day one you’ve been professing all these feelings for me, but the minute I decide to reciprocate you run like a scared rabbit. Fine. Run away little girl. I don’t have time for this.
FELICITY: Ben…it’s just…
BEN: Maybe I didn’t make myself clear. I want you to leave.
FELICITY: Ben…
BEN: Now.
FELICITY WALKS OUT OF BEN’S APARTMENT. WHEN SHE GETS DOWN TO THE INTERCOM SHE BUZZES HIM.
BEN: (on intercom) What?
FELICITY: Ben…I’m sorry.
BEN:I told you Felicity… I don’t have time for this.
FELICITY: Please don’t be mad.
BEN: I’m not mad…please just… go.
INT: FELICITY’S DORM-DAY
FELICITY IS BACK AT HER DORM. JULIE WALKS UP TO HER.
JULIE: Hey…you missed class. Is everything all right?
FELICITY: I don’t think so. I just had a fight with Ben.
JULIE: What did you fight about?
FELICITY: It’s dumb really. He accused me of playing games with him because I wasn’t 100% sure I wanted to pursue a relationship.
JULIE: Ben wants a relationship and you said no?
FELICITY: Not exactly. I said I wasn’t sure. He called me a scared little girl. Do you think I was wrong?
JULIE: I don’t know. I guess I’m just kind of surprised.
FELICITY: What is so surprising about this?
JULIE: Well it’s just that Ben has been all you’ve talked about since you got to New York. I guess I just assumed you would jump at the chance to be with him.
FELICITY: So your saying that I was wrong and Ben was right?
JULIE: No. I’m just saying maybe you need to be a little more honest with yourself so you can be honest with Ben.
EXT: BEN’S LOFT-NIGHT
FELICITY IS RINGING BEN’S INTERCOM. SEAN ANSWERS.
SEAN: Yes?
FELICITY: Ben?
SEAN: No it’s Sean. Ben isn’t here right now.
FELICITY: Do you know when he’s going to be back?
SEAN: Is this Sissy?
FELICITY: No it’s Felicity.
SEAN: Felicity…sorry. You can come up and wait in his room if you want.
FELICITY: Yeah…could you buzz me up?
SEAN BUZZES FELICITY UP. FELICITY GOES INTO BEN’S ROOM AND WAITS FOR HIM.
INT: MAIN ROOM OF DORM-NIGHT
JULIE IS SITTING IN THE LOUNGE WITH ELENA. NOEL WALKS UP TO THEM.
NOEL: Have you seen Felicity?
ELENA: She said something about going over to Ben’s.
NOEL: Does anybody know what’s going on there?
ELENA: I’m sure you do.
NOEL: I was just wondering if anybody had an updated version.
JULIE: Well I know Felicity and Ben had a fight.
NOEL: A fight?….Really?
BEN WALKS UP.
BEN: Hey, I was looking for Felicity has anyone seen her?
ELENA: We thought she was with you.
BEN: No. Look if you see her will you tell her I came by.
INT:BEN’S LOFT-NIGHT
BEN WALKS INTO HIS APARTMENT AND SISSY IS SITTING ON THE COUCH.
SISSY: It’s about time you got here. I was starting to think you were standing me up.
BEN: Sissy. We were suppose to go out tonight…weren’t we?
SISSY: You forgot?
BEN: The last couple of days have just been kind of hectic. I’ll just need to change my shirt and we can go.
SEAN: (to Ben) Can I talk to you for a minute.
BEN: Sure…what’s up?
SEAN: Felicity is in your room.
BEN: What! How did she get in my room?
SEAN: I thought I was doing you a favor. She came over right before Sissy. I told her she could wait in your room.
BEN: What am I going to do? If Felicity sees Sissy here she’ll flip.
FELICITY PICKS THIS MOMENT TO WALK OUT.
FELICITY: Ben I thought I heard your voice.
SISSY: Ben? Who is that? And why was she in your room?
FELICITY: I’m Felicity. And you are…
SISSY: Sissy. Sissy Baxter. Ben’s date for the evening.
FELICITY: Your Sissy?
BEN: Felicity I can explain.
FELICITY: God…I just keep doing one embarrassing thing after another…don’t I?
FELICITY RUNS OUT OF THE APARTMENT.
BEN: Felicity…wait! (ben runs out after her)
BEN CATCHES UP TO FELICITY AT THE ELEVATOR. BUT DOORS CLOSE AS HE GETS THERE.
SISSY: (standing at apt. door ) Who is this Felicity?
INT: FELICITY’S ROOM-NIGHT
FELICITY IS RECORDING A TAPE TO SALLY.
FELICITY: Sally…I think I’m going to write a book. I’m going to call it “ One Million Ways to Embarrass Yourself With Little Or No Effort. I just had the most embarrassing thing happen over at Ben’s today. Wait I’m jumping ahead of myself. Ben and I were really starting to connect. He said he wanted a relationship with me. Every Felicity’s dream come true…right? Wrong. I completely flaked on him. I wavered and he called me a scared little girl…accused me of playing head games with him. Wait it gets better. Felicity thinks she can go apologize and make everything better. When am I going to learn an apology doesn’t always fix every thing. It has no magic powers. Sally he had a date over at his house…a date. 12 hours ago he wanted to be with me and now he is on a date. I guess he recovers quickly.
THERE IS A KNOCK AT FELICITY’S DOOR.
FELICITY: Who is it?
NOEL: It’s Noel.
FELICITY OPENS DOOR. NOEL AND BEN ARE STANDING THERE.
NOEL: That’s the last time I’ll do that man…next time you fight…you’re on your own.
FELICITY: What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be somewhere making out with Sissy?
BEN: Felicity…we can do this the easy way or the hard way.
FELICITY: What’s the hard way?
BEN: We keep throwing sarcastic barbs at each other until one of us gives up out of sheer exhaustion.
FELICITY: What’s the easy way?
BEN: You let me come in and we discuss this…hopefully on a rational level.
FELICITY: Come in.
BEN COMES IN AND SITS DOWN.
BEN: I made that date with Sissy on Halloween…before anything happened between us.
FELICITY: I just felt like such a fool…I came over to apologize to you for my behavior. I didn’t expect to get caught in the middle like that.
BEN: I know…I’m sorry. Can we please just start over. Decide what’s going on and move forward from there. I’ll accept whatever you say.
FELICITY: You would accept just friends?
BEN: Yes…fine if that’s what you want. I have to be honest with you. It’s less than I want but… if that’s all you want.
FELICITY: It’s just that…well…Physically were just on such different levels. You’ve been with five different women and well I’ve pretty much been with no one. I mean I’ve kissed guys before…but that’s about it. What happened between us that night was so unexpected that I didn’t have time to analyze it to death. It was only later thinking about it and how comfortable you made me. I wasn’t scared with you. But Ben it’s just another number for you…for me it would have been a huge deal.
BEN: I know that. I wasn’t trying to take advantage of you. I know if it had happened that night it would have been wrong….but not because I was using you Felicity. It would have been wrong because I’m not in love with you. I understand that that’s what you need.
FELICITY: Then you understand why staying friends is probably best.
BEN: No…I think you think love is just automatic. Love takes time and work. I’ve never been truly in love before because I’ve never been willing to do the work. I think that’s what scares me about you most of all. I can see myself doing the work. I’ve already worked harder to maintain a relationship with you then anyone else I’ve ever known. I think there has to be a reason for that.
FELICITY: What are you saying?
BEN: I’m saying that….we deserve a chance to see if all the work we’ve put in to this is going anywhere.
FELICITY: I don’t know…
BEN: Just think about it Felicity…that’s all I’m asking.
BEN WALKS UP TO FELICITY GIVES HER A HUG AND KISSES HER ON THE TOP OF HER HEAD.
BEN: I’ll talk to you later.
FELICITY IS TALKING INTO RECORDER.
FELICITY: Sally, everytime I tape a message to you Ben comes over. Are you trying to tell me something? I can’t believe the changes in him and me. He wants to be with me. He says he’s never put this much work into any relationship before and he thinks we deserve a chance to see if all the work is heading somewhere.I was going to take your advice and tell him about needing to be in love before I made love and it’s bizarre he beat me to the punch. He told me he knew love was an important part of the physical for me. What’s happening here? Ben wants me. I have to pinch myself to believe it. This is going to be a challenge. I want so much to be with him.
SALLY: (VO) Felicity, Ben is becoming one smart man. I know the next few steps you’re going to be taking are going to be beyond baby steps. Remember though. New York was your first big big step and you survived. It’s great that Ben understands what you need. That’s one plus for the relationship right there. When you got to New York your eyes were closed and slowly surely they are opening. Your experience was limited and now it’s expanding. I guess you could say you got your wake-up call just maybe not the one you expected. Stay true to yourself and enjoy the ride.
